Learn to weave a 4 strand plait using tear ribbon/florist ribbon and my step by step illustrated instructions.
This is my all time favourite plait and one I taught myself over 15 years ago. You can use all kinds of materials, including florist ribbon, strips of paper or natural fibres like lomandra, pandanus (lau fala) or flax (harakeke).
This plait is used across the Moana (Pacific Islands). I’ve seen it in my mother’s old mats, as decorations on bags, hats, jewellery and more!
So find a comfy spot, grab a cup of tea or some coconut water and snacks and download my instructions.
What you will need:
- 2 x 2m lengths of tear/florist ribbon in 2 different colours. For this tutorial, the strands are 2m x 3cm. You can buy tear ribbon online here. Rolls are roughly $4 (91m) or you can try your local Discount or Craft store.
- scissors to cut the ends.
- a flat surface, like your dining table or the floor.
Make sure to email me your pictures of your competed plaits and tag me on instagram and facebook @maryanntaliapau
Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Happy Weaving!
